Sr Virtual Designer

vConstruct is seeking an experienced Senior Modeler with strong structural steel detailing expertise and advanced knowledge of Tekla Structures and AISC standards. This role is responsible for independently delivering complex modelling and detailing work while providing technical guidance and support to other modelling resources.The role combines hands-on technical delivery, design interpretation, constructability, coordination, quality ownership, and team mentoring. The Senior Modeller works closely with Project Leads, Project Managers, Checkers, Engineers, BIM/VDC teams, and other stakeholders to develop accurate, coordinated, and fabrication-ready models and drawings in accordance with project requirements, client requirements, fabrication standards, and applicable codes.

Key Responsibilities:     

  • Support project initiation, project setup, preparation of estimates, model readiness, and project kickoff.
  • Review client detailing manuals, project standards, details and specifications to help establish necessary documentation for effective 3D modelling and detailing.
  • Thoroughly Interpret structural drawings, specifications, addendum, reference models, RFI’s and other design information to understand and apply design intent.
  • Support project delivery planning by coordinating modelling tasks, internal schedules, planned hours, and milestone requirements.
  • Model primary and secondary structural steel for critical items, complex connections, miscellaneous items such as embeds, stairs, handrails, ladders etc.
  • Review design documents for missing information, discrepancies, conflicts, and potential constructability issues and raise RFI’s for technical queries.
  • Coordinate with Project Leads, Project Managers, Checkers, Engineers, BIM/VDC teams, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues timely.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to Junior Modelers and Modelers.
  • Support project teams in monitoring modelling progress, productivity, and delivery readiness and proactively communicate technical risks, schedule risks, challenges, and potential impacts to project leadership timely.
  • Incorporate approved design revisions, RFIs, and client comments into models and deliverables in a controlled manner and track the COR’s.
  • Support the review and release of final deliverables in accordance with established project quality processes and client requirements.
  • Collaborate with checkers to identify opportunities to improve modelling quality, productivity, consistency, and delivery efficiency. Maintain a strong focus on first-pass quality and minimizing downstream rework.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support coordinated project delivery.
  • Support effective information management, maintain consistency in model standards, numbering, templates, reports, and project-specific workflows.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of modelling standards, procedures, checklists, templates, and workflows.
  • Support the development and use of Tekla custom components, auto connections, templates, reports, and other productivity tools.
  • Share knowledge, best practices, workflows, and lessons learned with the broader team.
  • Support technical training, skill development, and onboarding of new team members as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may also be considered.
  • 8+ years of experience in structural steel detailing, with significant experience in 3D steel modelling.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Tekla Structures, preferably on U.S.-based structural steel projects.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel detailing, fabrication, and erection practices.
  • Good working knowledge of AISC standards and U.S. structural steel detailing practices.
  • Experience working with engineers, fabricators, Project Managers, Checkers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance or mentoring to Junior and intermediate modelling resources.

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Tekla Structures.
  • Strong structural steel 3D modelling and detailing skills.
  • Complex steel connections and constructability.
  • Miscellaneous steel modelling and detailing.
  • Strong understanding of AISC, OSHA and relevant U.S. detailing practices.
  • Working knowledge of Tekla Power-Fab and Trimble connect.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam or similar review/markup tools.
  • Understanding of BIM/VDC coordination and multidisciplinary workflows.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with U.S. structural steel projects.
  • Experience with Tekla automation, custom components, templates, reports, and workflow optimization.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to technical quality.
  • Knowledge of Revit, Navisworks, or other BIM/VDC platforms.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop other team members.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and delivery commitments.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with an interest in innovation, standardization, and knowledge sharing.
